An application to discover the agricultural environment of Quebec

Eating local now more than ever!

A lively and tasty application

In 2020, the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) launched its eat local application called Mangeons local plus que jamais! to help Quebecers discover local products. Each year, new community stakeholders join the movement. To date, more than 1,500 Quebec farms and food processing companies have been included.

The calendar highlights the agrotourism events to mark in your family’s agenda. Young and old are welcome!

You’ll also find a blog full of tasty recipes, food preservation tips and processing ideas for eating Quebec foods all year round. Through the geo-localized map, the application will identify the producers you can visit to discover their products. Watch out, you might want to go back again and again!

“The wide range of agricultural and gourmet activities offered as part of Mangeons local plus que jamais! contributes to the promotion of our local producers, in addition to reminding us of the importance of eating local products. Travel through our regions of Quebec to discover or rediscover our local products.

Great finds await you,” stated the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

The science behind your favourite foods

Agriculture is a science. It’s about identifying the optimal quantities and conditions for the best food. That's why Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists collaborate with industry, academia and other partners year-round. Their goal is to create better opportunities for Canadian farmers through agricultural research and innovation. The Department’s scientists conduct projects on farmland across the country, on our experimental farms, and at our four Research and Development Centres (RDCs).

With the Mangeons local plus que jamais! application, you can locate the four centres where our teams are active in Quebec. Locate them on the application map with the red pointer featuring a maple leaf as follows:

Each RDC has its own area of expertise. For example, the Québec RDC focuses on agricultural productivity and sustainability, environmental performance (ecosystem) and threats to the value chain. The one in Sherbrooke is the Department’s only RDC exclusively dedicated to research in dairy and pork production. The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu RDC helps the Canadian horticultural sector to remain competitive and sustainable by developing new crop protection knowledge and technologies. Finally, the Saint-Hyacinthe RDC is dedicated to research in food processing and the improvement of manufacturing processes.

In total, more than 300 dedicated employees, including 66 scientists, work daily in the laboratory, in pilot plants or in the field to advance research in agriculture and agri-food to help the sector provide you with the best possible products.

An enriching experience with family and friends

Meeting passionate people who are dedicated to food production and processing in your area is a unique learning opportunity for the little ones and will provide inspiring discoveries for the older ones.

One-time activities and gourmet tours to be customized are available on the application. These thematic events will allow the whole family to learn more about food, technologies used in the fields, food processing and food biodiversity in addition to offering workshops to reconnect with the earth.

“The app has really given us a great showcase. We have many customers who discovered us by searching on the app. We are really happy with the results. It’s free and it’s a plus for producers,” said Anne-Sophie Paquet of Syldia farm in Neuville.

“The Mangeons local plus que jamais! application makes it possible, among other things, to list the agricultural businesses that have a sales booth on the farm and in public markets on a map of Quebec. This is an ideal opportunity to make an important citizen gesture and to support those who feed us every day! The Mangeons local plus que jamais! application is your ideal companion for planning your gourmet outings,” says Martin Caron, general president of the Union des producteurs agricoles.
