The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy continues to help the sector

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, producers and processors have faced many challenges maintaining their operations, including paying employees or keeping them employed. The Government of Canada has put in place financial support measures to help.

One of these measures is the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), which provides a subsidy of 75% of the wages to be paid by eligible employers to eligible employees.

With the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) expected to end on October 3, 2020, many Canadians will no longer receive financial assistance.

By making the CEWS more flexible, simpler, and accessible to approximately 45,000 farmers, agricultural businesses will be able to sustain their operations, keep employees on the payroll, and re-hire people who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Changes to the CEWS include an extension of eligibility periods, broader eligibility criteria and a new top-up subsidy for certain eligible applicants.
