We want to hear from you on the Next Agricultural Policy Framework

The Next Policy Framework (NPF) is a five-year (2023–2028) investment by federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) governments to strengthen and grow Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector. It will replace the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), which ends March 31, 2023.

As with the past frameworks, FPT governments are committed to seeking your perspectives, to ensure the success and vitality of the agriculture and agri-food sector through the NPF.

The goal is to engage with a variety of stakeholders from across Canada including producers, processors, Indigenous communities, youth, women in agriculture, environmental organizations, small and emerging sectors on the key policy objectives and principles that will help shape the NPF.

Phase one

In summer 2021, the first phase of NPF engagement was launched to help inform the development of the Guelph Statement announced by FPT Ministers of Agriculture in November 2021. This first phase sought stakeholders’ experiences with CAP, the challenges and opportunities they see for the sector, and their priorities for the NPF.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)-led engagement activities included the following in summer 2021:

  • Four virtual National Engagement Sessions;
  • An Engagement Session with Indigenous groups; and
  • Consultations with the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council, and other youth organizations.

Phase two

The second phase of NPF engagement is currently underway to seek input from you on how to realize the priorities articulated in the Guelph Statement, and your desired outcomes of the policies and programs to be implemented under the NPF.

Engagement activities to date have included the following:

  • Three virtual National Engagement Sessions;
  • An Engagement Session with Indigenous groups; and
  • Consultations with the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council.
