Objective

To demonstrate the use of OxiDate® 2.0 in an integrated disease management program for powdery mildew in grape

Powdery mildew (Uncinula nacator) is a widespread and serious disease in grape across Canada, and resistance to certain fungicides has become a problem within some pathogen populations. The biopesticide OxiDate® 2.0 was identified by growers as a biopesticide priority for Pesticide Risk Reduction regulatory support and has shown promise in the sustainable management of powdery mildew in grape in small scale trials. OxiDate® 2.0 is a liquid bactericide/fungicide and its active ingredients consist of hydrogen dioxide (27%) and peroxyacetic acid (2%). The product submission is under regulatory review by Health Canada – Pest Management Regulatory Agency for registration for the management of multiple crop diseases in Canada including powdery mildew in grapes. This one-year project being conducted in 2016 will demonstrate integrated management of powdery mildew in grape using OxiDate® 2.0 combined with other available disease management practices.

The project will be conducted in British Columbia on two grape cultivars, Merlot and Chardonnay, which are considered to be susceptible and partially resistant to powdery mildew, respectively. The other management practices include the use of another product, Kumulus (sulphur) in rotation with Oxidate, and diseased leaf removal. Disease incidence, severity and yield will be assessed for the performance of each of integrated treatment combinations, compared with the untreated control and among integrated treatments. A field day will show stakeholders the use of this product combined with other integrated management practices for optimal performance against grape powdery mildew in Canadian grape production system.
