Text: Steve Watts Owner & Agronomist Genesis Crop Systems

[Steve Watts stands in the field, addressing the camera.]

Steve: Hi, my name is Steve Watts. I’m the owner-operator of Genesis Crop Systems based in PEI Canada. This morning, we’re in a field belonging to Mull Na Beinne Farms just east of Kensington, PEI. And the reason we’re here this morning, we want to review what’s going on with the Living Lab – Atlantic field trial.

[Steve inspects the crops in the field.]

Nitrogen is one of 17 elements that are critical for plants to complete their lifecycle.

[The camera shows an aerial view of farmland next to the water.]

And more often than not, it’s the one that might be associated with potential environmental damage following its use in agriculture.

[Crops grow in a sunny field.]

The purpose of the trial is to evaluate various types of nitrogen fertilizer…

[A hand holds out blue pellets of fertiliser.]

…which will be released to the crop more slowly through the growing season…

[Steve pulls a plant from the soil.]

…based on when the crop needs it as opposed to when Mother Nature wants to release it.

[Steve shows off a plant’s root system.]

At the end of the season, we’re going to be evaluating the effect of these different programs…

[Steve addresses the camera.]

…on the overall amount of potatoes harvested under each treatment, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions related to each treatment, and the residual soil nitrogen left in the ground after the crop is harvested.
