Social media terms and conditions

Our social media accounts are extensions of the Government of Canada websites. We use them to connect with people, answer questions, and share information with Canadians at home and abroad.

By engaging with our content or participating in discussions on our channels, you agree to the terms and conditions on this page. We may update them at any time.

Terms of use for third-party social media

Your engagement with us via social media is also governed by the terms of use of third-party social media platform providers. We encourage you to read them for the platform(s) you are interested in. We use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and YouTube.

Privacy

Please do not share personal information about yourself or others in public comments. For specific concerns, contact us through a private message.

In accordance with the Access to Information Act and Privacy Act, the information you give to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will only be shared with another government department if your question or request is about that department.

No endorsement

Our decision to interact with another social media account (for example, follow, subscribe, like, repost, tag, or comment) does not imply an endorsement of that account.

Our social media accounts may post or display links or ads for websites that are not under our control. We are not responsible for the information found through these links or ads, nor do we endorse these sites or their content.

Comments

We welcome diverse opinions in the form of respectful and relevant interactions. Your comments are welcome at any time, and we will participate in discussions when appropriate. We may block users, and/or hide the following content:

  • messages that are racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, defamatory or threaten injury or death
  • abusive, aggressive, coarse, vulgar, violent, obscene, or pornographic comments
  • comments that encourage or suggest illegal activity
  • messages that violate copyright or other intellectual property rights
  • comments not sent by the author and/or posted by anonymous or robot accounts
  • repetitive posts copied and pasted by multiple users

Our department reserves the right to turn off the comments section, at any time, based on the criteria mentioned above. We are committed to creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment and actively monitor comments on our posts for compliance with these guidelines. If you come across any disrespectful content, remember that social media platforms offer tools to report it. We work to foster a safe online space for everyone.

Frequency

Our social media content is typically issued Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm ET. As needed, content may be scheduled for publication over the weekend and holidays. Sometimes, our channels may be down due to third-party service issues, which is out of our control.

Monitoring

Our accounts are monitored Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm ET. Questions or comments posted outside of these hours will be addressed as soon as possible.

Accessibility

Social media platforms are third-party service providers and are not bound by Government of Canada standards for Web accessibility.

If you have difficulty accessing content on our social media accounts, please contact us and we will try to solve the problem or provide you with the information in a different format.

Copyright

Information posted by the department is subject to the Copyright Act of Canada. It is also subject to the policies of each individual social media provider. For more information, see the Terms and Conditions page.

Official languages

The department respects the Official Languages Act and is committed to ensuring that our information is available in both English and French and that both versions are of equal quality. We maintain 2 accounts on most social media platforms, one in English and one in French. On each of the social media platforms that we use, you can set your preferred language for that site.

We reply to comments in the official language in which they are posted. If we think the response is a question of general public interest, we may translate a summary of the question and provide the information in both official languages.

We may share links that direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that are not subject to the Official Languages Act and available only in the language(s) in which they are written. When content is available in only one language, we make an effort to provide similar content in the other official language.

Employee use of social media

Some Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada employees communicate via social media in their personal and professional capacity under their own names or pseudonyms. Despite their professional affiliation with the department, the conduct of employees on social media does not represent the official or unofficial position or views of the department. Learn more about best practices for public servants using their personal social media.
