Foodservice

In 2021, consumer foodservice recorded positive growth in value sales after suffering a steep decline in 2020 (US$8.1 billion) from 2017 (US$12.8 billion). The easing of COVID-19 related restrictions helped foodservice establishments recover value sales. While there were still some surges in the number of COVID-19 cases from time to time, the restrictions foodservice establishments had to comply with were somewhat more lenient compared to the previous year. For example, in November 2021 the country was still under alert level two. Indoor dine-in services were only allowed to operate at a 10% venue/seating capacity and only cater to individuals fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while outdoor dining was allowed at 30% venue/seating capacity regardless of the vaccination status of customers. In 2021 foodservice establishments continued to heavily rely on the home delivery, takeaway and drive-through channels, along with group meals.

2021 key trends

The COVID-19 pandemic changed consumer dining behaviour. In 2021, foodservice establishments continued to strengthen their digital presence, online sales and delivery services, while also exploring outdoor dining as consumers deem this is a safer way to eat-in. E-commerce site becomes more and more popular.
