[Upbeat music begins]

The main questions, the basic questions, is about security.

Is Colombia safe to do business? Well, yes, Colombia has a history, but the economy is improving.

[The screen fades to black. An animated red and yellow maple leaf appears. The camera zooms in on the leaf, revealing a white background with a spinning red and white globe and on-screen text.]

[New text appears next to the globe.]

[The list fades, leaving only “Colombia” in bold. A black pin drops on the globe to mark Colombia. The scene cuts to Juan Carlos Navia speaking to the camera.]

My name is Juan Carlos Navia. I’m the Agriculture Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Embassy in Bogota, Colombia.

[Cut to a white background with red and black text and a faint outline of Colombia.]

[Text on screen: Colombia Market Snapshot – Population: 51M in 2022 – Canadian food exports to Colombia: Increased by 16.5% from 2018 to 2022  – Top Canadian exports: Grains, pulses, pork and prepared foods]

Colombia is a really good market for Canadian agri-food products.

[An aerial city view of Colombia.]

It’s a country of 50 million people, little bit more than that.

[Cut to an outdoor dining patio surrounded by a historic stone wall with old cannons positioned on top. A Colombian flag waves above the wall.]

All the cities that are really eager to try new products.

[Cut to an overhead view of a large crop field with mountains in the distance.]

Some products are grown in Colombia, made in Colombia, but some other products don’t grow in Colombia.

[Cut to an overhead view of multiple workers harvesting in a crop field. Juan Carlos Navia stands and talks to the camera.]

So Canada has a really good opportunity with agri-food products in that market.

[Cut to a street view of colorful houses in Colombia. Then, an aerial view of the city at night, showing the skyline lit up.]

[Juan Carlos Navia stands and talks to the camera.]

Top trends is a plant-based products…

[A close-up view of a wheat field.]

…for example wheat, barley, and grains and pulses.

[Cut to an overhead view of a crop field with silos and equipment in the background. Then, an overhead view of a combine harvester pouring grain into a parked grain truck.]

Canada is doing really well.

[A close-up view of a bag filled with grain glowing in the sunlight.]

Also there is a good trend with animal protein type of products…

[A waitress carries a tray filled with grilled meat and potatoes. Cut to the waitress placing the tray of food on a table for guests.]

…beef, pork, fish and seafood with Canada is very strong.

[The screen splits into three columns showing close-up clips of meat being grilled on a barbecue, chicken cooking in a frying pan, and salmon frying in a pan.]

Healthy products for younger generations…

[An overhead view of a woman stirring a bowl of yogurt and fruit while sitting on an exercise mat with weights nearby.]

…Colombia demands that type of products.

[A woman sips a green juice while standing in a gym.]

[Juan Carlos Navia stands and talks to the camera.]

It’s a good opportunity for Canadian exporters.

[Cut to an aerial view of the coastal waterfront of Colombia, showing beaches and city towers in the background.]

The way we see the market for Canadian agri-food exporters…

[An aerial city view of Colombia.]

…is we have divided like in four levels, a table with four legs.

[Cut to a white background with an animated drawing of a rectangular table. A line points to each of the four legs as on-screen text appears for each one.]

So you can focus on animal proteins…

[Text on screen: Animal Proteins]

…plant proteins as I mentioned.

[Text on screen: Plant Proteins]

We also have animal livestock genetics…

[Text on screen: Animal Livestock Genetics]

…because we have the market open from a sanitary perspective.

Also retail products, so there are like the four legs.

[Text on screen: Retail Products]

And we have the sanitary access with the CFIA equivalent agency in Colombia.

[Workers dressed in PPE handle raw meat in a factory. Cut to a close-up view of the workers packaging meat as it moves down a conveyor belt.]

And we have also a free trade agreement in place since 2012.

That generates confidence in Canadian exporters to reach.

[An overhead timelapse of people walking through a trade show. Cut to Juan Carlos Navia handing a card to someone behind a booth.]

Colombians, because it’s a Latin culture, they like to rely on face-to-face relationships.

[Cut to Juan Carlos Navia talking with two others at the trade show.]

So it’s not good enough just to send an email with a nice catalog or anything like that.

[An overhead city view of Colombia.]

It’s to do an investment in travel to the market, to prospect the market…

[A sped-up street timelapse of pedestrians walking and shopping in Colombia.]

…see what Colombians are consuming, how they’re consuming it…

[A close-up view of two shoppers talking beside some produce. Cut to a chef carefully plating a dish.]

…the type of quality that they’re looking for.

Try to have your material prepared in Spanish language. Not everybody speaks English or French. If you’re going to be present there, have a business partner…

[A close-up view of a group of business people talking at a table while holding documents.]

…and an agent or distributor that speaks the language, and is based in Colombia.

[Cut to an aerial view of a highway in Colombia with the Colombian flag waving above the city. Cut to Juan Carlos Navia standing and smiling at the camera beside a Canadian flag.]
