Dairy Direct Payment Program: Step 5. After you register

Step 5. After you register

1. We’ll process your registration

After your registration is received, we’ll verify that all required questions and declarations have been completed accurately. We may contact you for more information, if required.

2. We’ll send your payment

Eligible producers will receive a payment from the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC). Payments to eligible producers under the program are not repayable and will be treated as income in the year the payment is received. Income tax will be assessed accordingly.

How payments are calculated

Under the program, individual payments are calculated based on the percentage of each eligible producer’s quota relative to the provincial quota as of August 31, 2023.

The provincial share of the payments will be calculated based on the quota allocated to each province for the 12 months ending on August 31, 2023. Within each province, the per kilogram of quota payment amount will be calculated on quota issued on August 31, 2023 by the province to its eligible producers. To receive a payment, a producer must have held quota as of August 31, 2023.

The payment amount will depend on the quantity of quota held on August 31, 2023. This data will be provided by the provincial marketing milk boards to the Canadian Dairy Commission, who delivers the Dairy Direct Payment Program.

If you choose not to receive a payment from the Dairy Direct Payment Program, you don’t need to do anything. However, you may be contacted to confirm that you don’t want to receive the payment.

Test payment to validate direct deposit

If you registered to receive your payment through Direct Deposit for the first time (or if your banking information has changed), you’ll receive a test payment from the CDC to validate your account information.

Within approximately 15 business days of registering using the Program Portal, you’ll receive a small deposit (under $3) in the bank account you provided. You’ll receive an email notification a few days before the deposit is made. You must confirm receipt of the test payment to receive the balance of your full payment.

To confirm receipt of your test payment you’ll need:

The CDC will then deposit the balance of your payment.

Payment not received

You may not have received payment, for one (1) of the following reasons:

  • You did not hold quota on August 31, 2023
  • You do not have a valid quota licence registered with your provincial milk marketing board
  • The farm belongs to an institution (school farm, research centre) that does not own quota
  • You did not register for the Dairy Direct Payment Program in either the portal or by mail which includes your acceptance of the payment
  • You changed your banking information after you registered and did not inform the Canadian Dairy Commission
  • You have not updated your contact details with your provincial office, and therefore the program was unable to contact you

If you haven’t received your payment within 25 business days of submitting your registration, contact the program.

Service standards

The program’s goal is to achieve its service standards at a minimum of 80% of the time under normal circumstances. We aim to respond to general inquiries made to the program’s phone number or email address before the end of the next business day.
