Overview
This report provides a statistical overview of the vegetable industry including the number of farms, total farm area, production, farm gatenote 1 value, consumption and trade in the sector. It largely focuses on field vegetables.
In 2025, Canada produced over 2.5 million metric tons of field vegetables, an increase of 8.0% compared to 2024. Leading commodities such as tomatoes - which accounted for the largest share of production at 25.4% - and carrots (16.1%) experienced notable growth, with output rising by 18.4% and 15.5% over the previous year, respectively. In contrast, dry onion production, representing 10.8% of total field vegetable output, declined by 7.1% over the same period.
Ontario remained the leading producing province in 2025, accounting for 58.6% of Canada's total field vegetable output, followed by Quebec at 30.7%. Alberta, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia each contributed between 2.6% and 3.2%, while all other producing provinces individually accounted for less than 1%. Production increased in both Ontario and Quebec by 9.6% and 8.2%, respectively, compared to 2024. Alberta also recorded continued growth, with output rising 12.0% stemming from an 8.3% increase in planted area. Additional production gains were observed in British Columbia (2.5%), Manitoba (2.8%), and Saskatchewan (1.9%). In contrast, field vegetable production declined across the Atlantic provinces - falling between 12.3% and 16.6% - largely due to drought conditions.
Total farm gate value for Canadian field vegetables increased by 7.1% to more than $1.82 billion in 2025. Carrots ($192.9 million), tomatoes ($186.2 million), dry onions ($169.7 million), cabbage ($144.5 million), lettuce ($126.6 million) and sweet corn ($103.0 million) comprised almost half of the total value of all field vegetables grown in Canada. Among these six commodities, values increased between 10.8% and 16.9% over 2024, with the exception of dry onions, which declined by 6.3%, reflecting lower production levels. While farm gate values rose in most provinces compared to the previous year, declines were recorded in Nova Scotia (−19.3%) and New Brunswick (−3.3%), consistent with decreases in production reported in those provinces.
Driven by increased domestic production in 2025, the value of Canada's field vegetable exports (including frozen vegetables) increased by 5.2% year over year, reaching more than $1.11 billion. Canada ranked sixth among global fresh vegetable exporters, accounting for a 4.2% share of the market. Export values rose for key commodities such as carrots (+18.1%) and beans (+3.2%), while most other field vegetables experienced declines, including lettuce (−16.5%), onions and shallots (−13.3%), and cabbages (−8.0%). The United States continued to be Canada's primary export destination, representing 97.0% of total field vegetable export values.
Due to its geographic constraints and short growing season, Canada relies heavily on imports to meet year-round vegetable demand. In 2025, Canada's field vegetable trade deficit reached $2.98 billion, narrowing by 10.2% from 2024. This improvement reflects a 5.2% increase in export values (as noted above) alongside a 6.5% decline in import values. Ranked as the world's fifth-largest importer of fresh vegetables by value with a 5.3% global share, Canada imported over $3.90 billion worth of fresh vegetables in 2025, an 11.1% decrease compared to the previous year.
The United States remained Canada's dominant supplier of fresh and frozen field vegetable imports, accounting for more than $2.31 billion (56.5%), though this represented an 11.1% drop from 2024. Mexico was the second-largest source, contributing nearly $994.2 million (24.3%) in import value, down 5.5% year over year. In 2025, the leading imported field vegetables by value were lettuce ($682.4 million), cauliflower and headed broccoli ($311.2 million), onions and shallots ($292.8 million), cabbages ($269.9 million), and peppers ($225.4 million).
