2023 – 2024 Departmental risk snapshot

Departmental risks

Our people

Risk that with increasingly complex and multi-faceted priorities, and ongoing labour market shortages, constraints and pressures, paired with slow staffing processes, the department will be unable to attract, develop and retain a diverse, high performing, qualified workforce.

Our workplace

Risk that AAFC will be unable to adapt its processes and workplace in a way that maximizes the benefits of a hybrid workforce and seizes opportunities learned from the pandemic to empower agility, responsiveness and speed of decision-making.

Prioritization and oversight

Risk that the department may not have the processes or data to be able to effectively navigate financial pressures and ensure scarce resources are allocated to areas of greatest importance.

Cyber security

Risk that AAFC will be unable to effectively prevent, detect, contain or respond to cyber security threats that may affect its operations, systems and information.

Critical infrastructure

Risk that laboratories and other critical infrastructure will not be maintained or recapitalized, in support of leading-edge, sustainable, safe and secure scientific and operational activities.

Modernization for digital and data-enabled services and decisions

Risk that the department will not modernize its digital infrastructure in an appropriate or timely enough fashion to adequately support a secure, data-enabled business model and efficient operations.

Climate and sustainability

Risk that AAFC's policy directions, program solutions and scientific activities will not adequately respond to the climate and environmental threats facing the agricultural sector, resulting in reduced climate resiliency, negative economic impacts for Canada and missed opportunities for greater sustainability.

Economic and market disruption

Risk that major disruptive industry and market crises will occur, making it challenging for the department to respond while continuing to deliver on its core responsibilities.
