Federal Sustainable Development Strategy

The Government's commitment to sustainable development is reflected in the Federal Sustainable Development Act (the Act), which received Royal Assent on June 26, 2008.

The Act requires the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to table a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, and a report on the federal government's progress in implementing the Strategy, every three years.

The Act also requires each Minister presiding over a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy department or agency to prepare a Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy.

2022-2026 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy

The 2022 to 2026 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, tabled in November 2022, is the first to be developed under a strengthened Federal Sustainable Development Act. Taking a whole-of-government approach, it brings sustainable development goals, targets, milestones and implementation strategies across 101 federal organizations together in one place. It supports Canada’s efforts to advance the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With the 17 SDGs as its frame, the strategy highlights federal government actions over the next 4 years to support their achievement.

Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy

This 2023-2027 Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy was tabled in October 2023.

It describes the department's objectives, vision and plans for sustainable development appropriate to its mandate. It articulates the department's contributions to the goals and targets of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, as well as the application of strategic environmental assessments.

The Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy is updated (as required) and results are reported annually.
