Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency Equine Drug Control Program

The Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) Equine Drug Control Program's objective is to deter the uncontrolled use of drugs or medication in racehorses participating in pari-mutuel races.

Services of the program

Testing

The CPMA collects and analyzes urine or blood samples from horses before or after a horse race. Positive drug cases are reported to the appropriate provincial regulatory body (that is, racing commission) for adjudication.

Advice on medication use

The Elimination Guidelines provide information on how to use some approved medications without incurring a positive test.

Please contact the CPMA for specific questions about the use of approved medications in racehorses.

Industry notifications

The CPMA issues industry notifications to inform the public when new substances are added to the regulations or if changes are made to the program or new information is available about a particular substance. Notifications are posted on the CPMA Industry Notifications web page and via email notifications.
