HK/MC import virtually all fish and seafood products, which increased by 3.9% annually over 2019 to 2023. In 2023, Canada had a fish and seafood trade surplus of Can$118.8 million with HK/MC. HK/MC's fish and seafood imports from Canada have been increasing at a slower rate to China's imports from the world.
In 2023, the top five fish and seafood suppliers to HK/MC accounted for Can$10.8 billion or 55.8% of total fish and seafood imports. The top five imports to HK/MC over 2019 to 2023 were fish heads, tails and maws, live fish, processed frozen shrimp, and processed sea cucumber. Canada's import supply gap to HK/MC of its top ten fish and seafood imports is high due to competitors' advantages in most of these products. Canada is competitive in cold water shrimps, processed scallops, and processed frozen shrimp, as the 8th, 10th, and 11th largest supplier respectfully. HK/MC cold water shrimp imports from Canada have increased 43.0% annually over 2019-23, followed by processed frozen shrimps (10.5%). Other fast growing imports include fish heads, tails, and maws (44.6%) and fish parts for medical products (14.3%). Top imports from Canada were live eel, lobster, prepared lobster, molluscs, oysters, and scallops.
