Due to COVID-19, 2020 and 2021 were not good years for foodservice whose value sales dropped because of the closure of some outlets and reduced opening hours of the facilities. Another reason is that the number of the tourists significantly decreased.

Chained consumer foodservice in Italy represented US$5,781.6 million while independent represented US$67,481.8 million in 2021. The independent consumer foodservice had a 92.1% share among the total consumer foodservice in Italy. The CAGR of total foodservice was down to −4.6% from 2016 to 2021.

Foodservice of full-service restaurant value sales fell by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% from 2016 to 2021 to US$36.6 billion in 2021.

Foodservice of the limited-service restaurants fell by 1.7% from 2016 to 2021, reaching US$20.5 billion in 2021, whilst outlet numbers decrease to 39,729.

In 2021, McDonald's Corp was the Italy's top food service company with value sales of US$1,551.4 million. Autogrill SpA was the second largest foodservice company with value sales of US$512.4 million, followed by Cremonini SpA (US$447.3 million), Cigierre Spa (US$326.0 million), and Restaurant Brands International Inc (US$255.2 million). Among the top 10 restaurants, except the two restaurants: Autogrill SpA and Sebeto Spa with a negative CAGR, all the restaurants had a positive CAGR growth from 2016 to 2021.
