Data on hatching eggs, day-old chicks and poults, and started pullets are collected weekly from all chicken and turkey hatcheries registered under the Health of Animals Act directly and from the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers. For imports of chicks and poults, these data in also include imported chicks and poults shipped directly to producers without passing first through a hatchery.
Where data is reported by month, quarter, or year, weekly data is assigned to a given month according to the Poultry Market Information Calendar.
Data from the Atlantic Provinces is combined to protect the confidentiality of the hatcheries. The interprovincial movement figure (report 109) showing 'from' the Atlantic Provinces and 'to' the Atlantic, represents movement within the Atlantic provinces, i.e., between Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Chicken
- Egg-type
- An egg-type chicken, also known as a layer, is a breed of chicken specifically raised for the production of eggs for consumption.
- Broiler/roaster-type
- A broiler/roaster chicken is a type of chicken specifically bred and raised for meat production.
- Small lots
- Small lots refers to chicks that are sold in smaller quantities, typically for hobbyists, or small-scale producers who do not require large quantities of chickens.
- Chicken eggs placed in incubators in registered hatcheries (Report 101)
- Total of chicken eggs placed in hatcheries by end use (egg production or broiler/meat production), regardless of origin. This data does not include chicks which are exported.
- Placement of chicks- Egg Production Pullets (Report 101)
- Total of chicks destined for table egg production sent to farms within the province or region, regardless of origin. This data does not include chicks which are exported.
- Placement of chicks- Pullet Chicks Placed for Broiler Supply Flocks (Report 101)
- Total of breeder broiler chicks sent to farms by hatcheries, regardless of origin. This data does not include chicks which are exported.
- Broiler chicks (Report 101)
- Total of broiler chicks sent to farms by hatcheries. These also include imported chicks and chicks shipped interprovincially from another province. This data does not include chicks which are exported.
- Eggs set for egg production chicks (Report 103)
- Total of all chicken hatching eggs placed in incubators for table egg production, regardless of origin.
- Chicks hatched for egg production (Report 103)
- Total of all chicks hatched for table egg production, excluding those rejected due to mortality or malformation.
- Placement of egg production chicks (Report 103)
- Total of all female chicks destined for table egg production sent to farms within the province or region, regardless of origin.
- Eggs set for broiler stock (Report 103)
- Total of all chicken hatching eggs placed in incubators for broiler/roaster production, regardless of origin. Hatching eggs which do not hatch are included.
- Chicks hatched for broiler and roaster stock (Report 103)
- Total of all chicks hatched for broiler/roaster production, excluding the chicks found dead.
- Placement of broiler and roaster chicks (Report 103)
- Total of all chicks destined for broiler/roaster production sent to farms within the province or region, regardless of origin.
- Placement of broiler chicks for small lots (Report 103)
- Totals of chicks destined for broiler/roaster production that were sold to small lots, regardless of origin.
- Chicks unsold- Egg production and Broiler stock (Report 108)
- Chicks not sold or placed on farm, regardless of reason.
- Pullets chicks for egg production-female (Report 109)
- Total of female chicks for table egg production which are moved interprovincially. This data does not include started pullets, breeders or imported chicks.
- Started pullets (Report 109)
- Total of started pullets which are moved interprovincially. Started pullets are defined as any chicken destined for egg production older than one day which has not started laying. This data does not include imported started pullets or pullets chicks.
- Male chicks, commercial-egg stock (Report 109)
- Total of male egg-type chicks sold to small lots which are moved interprovincially. This data does not includes breeders or imported chicks.
- Chicks for broiler production (Report 109)
- Total of broiler/roaster chicks moved interprovincially and placed on a farm. This data does not include imports or breeders.
- Broiler chicks for small lots (Report 109)
- Total of broiler commercial chicks sold in small lots and moved interprovincially.
- Chicken hatching eggs - egg stock (Report 109)
- Total of all hatching eggs destined for table egg production moved interprovincially received by an hatchery operation. This data does not include imports.
- Chicken hatching eggs - broiler chicken (Report 109)
- Total of all hatching eggs destined for broiler production moved interprovincially received by an hatchery operation. This data does not include imports.

Turkey
- Broiler
- A broiler turkey is a smaller type of turkey raised specifically for meat production or to be sold as a whole bird to consumers.
- Heavy
- A heavy turkey refers to a turkey that has been raised to a larger size and weight, often for specific markets or purposes that require more meat, such as further processing.
- Turkey Eggs Placed in Incubators in Registered Hatcheries (Report 101)
- Weekly total of turkey eggs placed in hatcheries by end use. Where the end use is not immediately known, it is reported as a heavy poult. This data does not include eggs which are exported.
- Placement of Poults (Report 101)
- Weekly total of poults sent to farms by hatcheries by end use, and for heavy poults, by sex, regardless of origin. This data does not include poults which are exported.
- Eggs set for broiler poults (Report 103)
- Total of all turkey eggs placed in hatcheries for broiler poults. Where the end use is not immediately known, eggs are reported as heavy poults. These also include imported hatching eggs and eggs shipped interprovincially from another province. They do not include eggs which are exported.
