Agricultural Climate Solutions – On-Farm Climate Action Fund

Intake period: Closed

The list of 2025-2028 recipient organizations is now available.

First announced in Budget 2021, the $704.1-million On-Farm Climate Action Fund is an initiative to help farmers tackle climate change. The Fund is part of the Government of Canada's Agricultural Climate Solutions program, which falls under the more than $5-billion Natural Climate Solutions Fund, a 10-year (2021-2031) initiative managed by Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Objective

The objective of the fund is to support farmers in adopting beneficial management practices (BMPs) that store carbon and reduce greenhouse gases, specifically in the areas of:

  1. nitrogen management
  2. cover cropping
  3. rotational grazing practices

These practices also provide other environmental benefits such as improved biodiversity and soil health.

Other activities to support the adoption of beneficial management practices, such as outreach, education and training are offered.

Eligibility

To learn about regional recipient organizations' BMP activities, please find their contact information in the recipient organization filterable table and completed projects table below.

To learn about which BMP activities are eligible under the fund or, to propose a new program-aligned BMP to be considered for eligibility, and find out about previously reviewed BMPs, please contact the program for guidelines and the application form.

Distribution of funds

The 2025-2028 expansion of the fund  will provide an additional $300 million to 13 2025-2028 recipient organizations to continue supporting farmers in their efforts to become more climate resilient.

Budge 2023 committed an allocation of $34.1 million to Eastern Canadian producers who were impacted by high fertilizer prices.

Budget 2022 announced an extension of the fund for 4 additional years, with the initiative now expected to end on March 31, 2028.

On February 22, 2022, the first 12 projects were announced under the fund. Additionally, an Indigenous-led project with the Manitoba Métis Federation was announced on July 4, 2023, raising the total to 13 projects nationwide, totaling up to $189.9 million.
