Intake period: Closed
Existing On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) initial recipient organizations and selected eligible organizations in Saskatchewan and Newfoundland have been asked to submit project plans for the second phase of OFCAF which will run from April 2025 until March 2028.
If you have any questions, please contact the Agricultural Climate Solutions program team at aafc.acs-sac.aac@agr.gc.ca.
First announced in Budget 2021, the $704.1-million On-Farm Climate Action Fund is an initiative to help farmers tackle climate change. The Fund is part of the Government of Canada's Agricultural Climate Solutions initiative, which falls under the $4 billion Natural Climate Solutions Fund, a program managed by Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
Objective
The objective of the Fund is to support farmers in adopting beneficial management practices (BMPs) that store carbon and reduce greenhouse gases, specifically in the areas of:
- nitrogen management
- cover cropping
- rotational grazing practices
These practices also provide other environmental benefits such as improved biodiversity and soil health.
Other activities to support the adoption of beneficial management practices, such as outreach, education and training are supported.
To learn about regional recipient organizations' BMP activities, please find their contact information in the recipient organization filterable table and completed projects table below.
If you want a new program-aligned BMP to be considered for eligibility, or to find out about previously reviewed BMPs, please contact the program for guidelines and the application form.
Distribution of funds
During fiscal year 2024-25, through individual application intakes, the following 11 recipient organizations will redistribute funding to help farmers adopt and implement immediate on-farm BMPs that store carbon and reduce greenhouse gases in the areas of nitrogen management, cover cropping, and rotational grazing practices.
Budget 2023 approved an allocation of $34.1 million to Eastern Canadian producers who were impacted by high fertilizer prices.
Budget 2022 announced an extension of OFCAF for 4 additional years, with the initiative now expected to end on March 31, 2028.
On February 22, 2022, 12 projects were announced under the Fund. Additionally, an Indigenous-led project with the Manitoba Métis Federation was announced on July 4, 2023, raising the total to 13 projects nationwide, totaling up to $189.9 million.
From August 12, 2021 to September 26, 2021, the Fund sought proposals from potential recipient organizations across Canada, including:
- not-for-profit organizations, including producer groups, commodity organizations and non-governmental organizations
- Indigenous groups
- for-profit organizations
- provincial or territorial Crown corporations
