Hatchery review terms of reference

Data on hatching eggs, day old chicks and poults, and started pullets are collected weekly from all chicken and turkey hatcheries registered under the Federal Hatchery Regulations. For imports of broiler commercial chicks and commercial poults only, these data in addition include imported chicks shipped to producers.

Data reported in the Hatchery Reports are monthly or quarterly, by province or region with a Canada total, and with comparative data for the previous year. For most tables year-to-date figures are also given. All data are in thousands of actual numbers.

Monthly figures are calculated from the weekly reports. If the month terminates or begins in the middle of a week, then the weekly figures are split, so that the month represents the actual number of days in the month.

Data from the Atlantic Provinces are totalled to protect the confidentiality of the hatcheries.

Report 103 - Eggs set and chicks/poults hatched - placement of chicks/poults

Chicken (egg-type and broiler-type)

  • Eggs set for egg production - chicks
Totals of all egg-type chicken hatching eggs, both breeder and commercial, placed in incubators. These also include imported hatching eggs and eggs shipped interprovincially from another province. They do not include eggs which are exported. Eggs which do not hatch are included.
  • Chicks hatched for egg production
Totals of all egg production type chicks hatched excluding the culls (dead and disabled), but including those which are healthy but are later destroyed. The hatch reported is from eggs set 3 weeks previously, so the set and hatch for one month are not comparable.
  • Placement of egg production chicks
Totals of all commercial female egg-type chicks sold in large and small lots which are hatched and placed in the province or region, plus those moved into that province from another province or another country. Breeder female chicks are included. Male commercial chicks are not included.
If the commercial chicks are not sexed but sold in mixed lots, then the placement figure includes one half of this number.
  • Eggs set for broiler stock
Totals of all broiler-type chicken hatching eggs, both breeder and commercial, placed in incubators. These include imported hatching eggs and eggs shipped interprovincially from another province. They do not include eggs which are exported. Eggs which do not hatch are included.
  • Chicks hatched for broiler and roaster stock
Totals of all broiler and roaster type chicks hatched excluding the culls (dead and disabled), but including those which are healthy but are later destroyed. The hatch reported is from eggs set 3 weeks previously, so the set and hatch for one month are not comparable.
  • Placement of broiler and roaster chicks
Totals of all broiler and roaster commercial chicks hatched and placed in the province or moved into that province from another province or from another country. It does not include broiler-type chicks placed in small lots. It does not include chicks exported - either commercial or breeders. This is available 1994 and forward.
  • Placement of broiler chicks for small lots
Totals of broiler chicks hatched and sold in small lots in that province or moved into that province from another province. Imports of small lots (if there are any) are not captured. Small lots are largely seasonal, and represent a small percentage only of broiler chick placements.

Turkey

  • Eggs set for broiler poults
Totals of all broiler-type turkey hatching eggs, both breeder and commercial, placed in incubators. These include imported hatching eggs and eggs shipped interprovincially from another province. They do not include eggs which are exported. Eggs which do not hatch are included.
  • Turkey Poults hatched for broiler weights
Totals of all broiler poults hatched excluding the culls (dead and disabled), but including those which are healthy but are later destroyed. The hatch reported is from eggs set 4 weeks previously, so the set and hatch for one month are not comparable.
  • Placement of broiler poults
Totals of all commercial broiler poults sold which are hatched and placed in the province or region, plus heavy females placed in the province as broilers, plus broiler poults moved into that province from another province or another country. Breeder poults are not included. Exports are not included.
  • Turkey eggs set for heavy weights
Totals of all heavy-type turkey hatching eggs, both breeder and commercial, placed in incubators. These included imported hatching eggs and eggs shipped interprovincially from another province. They do not include eggs which are exported. Eggs which do not hatch are included.
  • Turkey poults hatched for heavy weights
Totals of all heavy-type poults hatched excluding the culls (dead and disabled), but including those which are healthy but are later destroyed. The hatch reported is from eggs set 4 weeks previously, so the set and hatch for one month are not comparable.
  • Placement of heavy weight poults
Totals of all heavy weight commercial poults hatched and placed in the province, plus broiler toms placed as heavies, plus commercial heavy-weight poults moved into that province from another province or from another country. It does not include poults exported - either commercial or breeders.

Report 108 - Chicks/Poults unsold

Chicken(egg-type and broiler-type)

  • Chicks unsold- Egg production and Broiler stock

Turkey

  • Poults unsold
Totals of all poults which are unsold because there is no market for them, either because of their sex, or because the demand has been over estimated.

Report 109 - Interprovincial Movements

Report 109 shows interprovincial movement of products from a province and to another province.
